Well no duh. This post explains some of the problems people have switching from mac to windows.
I must admit, as a long time windows user, I find OSX postively baffling. I get sooo frustrated trying to use a mac I usually just give up. I have never, not once, successfully installed a piece of downloaded software. Couldn’t begin to tell you how. I downloaded firefox for my iMac, and have no idea where it went or how to install it.
That’s why the mac just sits in the corner, weeping, hoping someday I’ll take enough video to do an iMovie project.

This problem is not as hard as you think it is.
If you are using Safari, go to Safari Preferences. Under the General category (the light switch icon), you’ll find an item that reads:
Save downloaded files to: and a pop-up menu.
It’s a long time since I saw the default option, but it might be the Desktop (right in front of your nose) or you.
If you don’t like icons cluttering up your beautiful desktop picture, Click on the pop-up menu and choose “Other…” . This will bring up a dialog box for you to choose an already existing folder, or you can create a new folder… absolutely wherever you want it to be!!
Now put your brand-new Downloads folder in the Finder’s Sidebar.
Voilà!! Now you’ll always know where that download went.
I named my downloads folder *Downloads* which I put on my desktop. Why the asterik at the beginning, I hear you cry? Because, named that way, the file is the first one I see at the top of the list or beginning of the window.
Now, to make things even more findable (or not, depending on your habits and preferences), you can download and install Saft (inexpensive shareware)
Saft 8.3 – MacUpdate
or SafariStand (or both).
SafariStand 2.0b14 – MacUpdate
Either one will have a Preference setting which will create dated subfolders within your chosen downloads folder. So if you downloaded something today, you just look in your downloads folder. You’ll find your download in the folder with today’s date on it.
I find this feature invaluable, since not all downloads are logically named, as you probably already know. I’m also slow on the trigger at nixing DMG files I don’t need anymore.
OK… time to take that weeping Mac to come out of the corner and stop crying!
Not much video? Me neither. I make movies out of my still photos in iPhoto.
