Blurb says they’ll bring the power of publishing to the people. Looks like they are going to try and go beyond what CafePress and Lulu do — at least in the printing arena. They’ll print hardcover books in color! And from the images of the books they look like they’ll be full bleed too. That’s cool. It’s not clear if they’ll do ISBN numbering or get your books on Amazon the way LuLu can.
They’ll be really tough to resell too as the books are pricey. Want a few books for yourself, great, but 40 pages for $30, plus shipping? oof.
I have not tried the booksmart software yet but I am certainly going too. I can see the Blurb books competing with the photo books offered by Ofoto (I just can’t call them Kodak Photo Gallery — stupid name) shutterfly, snapfish and thier kin. I create a photo album at the end of ever year, and they run about $80 from Kodak, and thier formats are so limited. If I can cut that in half with more layouts, Blurb wins (for me, anyway).
They may not be targeting the novelist, we’ll know soon enough, I guess.
